Best tips for Big White

It’s the snow’ says the Big White slogan. And as slogans go, it’s spot on. If you want a good chance of skiing powder on reasonably easy slopes, put Big White high on the shortlist. If you want a suntan (or lively après-ski, or extensive steep terrain), look elsewhere; but if you are an intermediate looking to learn to ski powder or try gladed skiing, there can be few better places. Consider combining it with another BC resort such as Silver Star or Whistler for variety. Big White is a purpose-built resort that has more visitor beds than any other BC resort except Whistler. It’s less than an hour from Kelowna airport.

PROS:

  • Great for learning to ski powder
  • Slopes quiet except at weekends
  • Convenient, purpose-built village with high-quality condos and a traffic-free centre; good for families
  • Lots of non-skiing snow-based activities at Happy Valley

CONS:

  • Visibility can be poor, especially on the upper mountain, because of snow, cloud or freezing fog
  • Ski area modest by Alpine standards
  • Limited après-ski (but getting a bit livelier)
