Best tips for Kicking Horse - Golden

Kicking Horse was developed from a small local hill in 2000, when a long gondola was built accessing two high, powder-filled bowls – previously heli-skiing country. There were great ambitions to turn it into a major resort. But of course things have moved much more slowly than planned. In 2011 KH was sold to Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, owner of Fernie, Kimberley and other resorts, but there is no sign of any great transformation. The lift system and the ‘village’ at the base remain very limited. But the place is worth incorporating in a tour, or visiting for a day from Banff or Lake Louise. Eight miles from the logging/railway town of Golden, Kicking Horse is still embryonic – it has only two main lifts and a tiny base village. Daily Powder Express buses run from Banff and Lake Louise, at reasonable cost, and it makes a great day trip.

PROS:

  • Great terrain for experts and some for adventurous intermediates

  • Big vertical served by a gondola

  • Splendid mountaintop restaurant

CONS:

  • Resort village still embryonic

  • Gondola needs a mid-station to make the most of the mountain

  • Few groomed intermediate runs
