Best tips for Sestriere ski resort (Via Lattea)

Sestriere was built for snow – high, with north-west-facing slopes; sadly, the snow on these slopes often has a large artificial component. The real drawback, though, is that the village is a difficult place to like. There are two attractive solutions: stay a bit lower down in Borgata; or stay much lower down in Pragelato (linked by cable car) where there is an appealing Club Med. Sestriere was the first purpose-built resort, developed by Fiat’s Giovanni Agnelli in the 1930s. It is the best base for exploration of the Milky Way.

PROS:

  • Local slopes suitable for most levels – with some tough runs
  • Quick access to Sauze d’Oulx (and fairly quick to French Montgenèvre)
  • High with good snowmaking, but …

CONS:

  • Erratic natural snowfall
  • Village is a bit of an eyesore
  • For a purpose-built resort, not conveniently arranged
  • Weekend and peak-period queues
