RESORT DESCRIPTION FOR Park City

Park City ski resort is located surrounding Salt Lake City (USA, Utah). For skiing and snowboarding, there are 250 km of slopes available. 38 lifts transport the guests. The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 2,080 and 3,049 m.

In the 2015/2016 season, the Park City and Canyons ski resorts were connected and the combined ski resort is now called Park City. Over $50 million was invested in the project. Thanks to the new 8-person Interconnecting Gondola lift, Park City is now the largest ski resort in the USA. Park City is located only a half hour from Salt Lake City.

Best tips for Park City

The big news for 2015/16 is that Park City Mountain Resort (covered in this chapter) is to be linked to next-door Canyons (which has its own chapter) by a new gondola and new runs to form the USA’s biggest linked ski area. It could easily be made even bigger by linking to neighbouring Deer Valley (which also has its own chapter), which is separated from the Park City slopes only by a fence between two pistes, and by separate ownership. Any skier holidaying in Park City should definitely spend a day or more at Deer Valley (but boarding is banned there) and international visitors can buy a pass covering days at both. Park City’s historic Main Street is a compelling place to spend time, with colourful old buildings and lively bars and restaurants. And the town is a good base for visiting other Utah resorts, including the famously powdery Snowbird and Alta (both have their own chapters), less than an hour away by car. Park City is about 45 minutes by road from Salt Lake City. It was a silver-mining boom town, and in the late 19th century it boasted a population of 10,000, a red-light area, a Chinese quarter and 27 saloons.

PROS:

Entertaining, historic Main Street
Lots of bars and restaurants make nonsense of Utah’s Mormon image
Easy to ski Deer Valley as well as newly linked Canyons area

CONS:

Resort is an enormous, charmless sprawl, with most lodgings a drive from Main Street and the slopes
Runs tend to be rather short
Still a few slow chairlifts
