RESORT DESCRIPTION FOR Squaw Valley
The ski resort Squaw Valley is located at Lake Tahoe (USA, Western United States). For skiing and snowboarding, there are 100 km of slopes and 50 km of ski routes available. 24 lifts transport the guests. The winter sports area is situated between the elevations of 1,890 and 2,760 m.
As host of the 1960 Winter Olympics, the Squaw Valley legacy has maintained a vibrant ski culture and mountain energy that spans from village to peak. Its spirit of outdoor adventure is reflected by the views of Lake Tahoe’s translucent waters, and its inspiration is carved into the slopes of the Sierra mountains. Beginners will find forgiving learning zones set among dramatic alpine scenery, while varied trails, bowls and chutes mean that skiers and snowboarders will never outgrow Squaw’s progressive terrain. With consistent snowfall that stays around well into the spring, Squaw Valley boasts one of the longest ski and snowboard seasons in the country.

Best tips for Squaw Valley
The neat little car-free base ‘village’ is a pleasant enough place to stay but there’s not much life at night. And keen piste-bashers who like cruising groomed runs will find the ski area limited too. But Squaw now shares ownership and its lift pass with Alpine Meadows, only 15 minutes away by free shuttle-bus, which means there is quite a lot of skiing locally. Even so, we would always combine a stay in Squaw with one in another Tahoe resort. Squaw is the major resort at the north end of Lake Tahoe. Staying here has become more attractive since the car-free Village was built; but it is still also popular with day trippers. There are other lodgings around the lake, and at Tahoe City. The lift pass also covers neighbouring Alpine Meadows (currently a 15-minute ride by frequent free shuttle-buses; but planned to be linked by gondola in due course).
- Lots of challenging terrain
-
Superb beginner slopes
- Convenient ‘village’ at the base
- Impressive snow record but…
- Last few years have been dry
-
Not for mile-hungry intermediates
- Lifts prone to closure by wind
- Limited range of village amenities
