Best tips for Alta

Alta and linked Snowbird are the powder capitals of the world, and add up to a great area for adventurous skiers. Alta has a friendlier, more personal feel than Snowbird, which gets its own chapter a few pages on. Alta sits at the craggy head of Little Cottonwood Canyon, 2km beyond Snowbird and less than an hour’s drive from downtown Salt Lake City. Both the resort and the approach road are prone to avalanches and closure: visitors can be confined indoors.

  • Steep terrain and, usually, phenomenal snow mean cult status among experts
  • Linked to Snowbird, making one of the larger ski areas in the US
  • Ski-almost-to-the-door convenience
  • No snowboarding allowed
  • Limited groomed runs for intermediates; limited enjoyment for experts in poor snow years
