Summer ski resorts

If you not a going to New Zealand or Australia you have to go high (over 2500m at least) but glacier skiing is definitely worth a trip, with resorts offering more and more each year. This sort of holiday is great if you missed out on the traditional winter season and the beauty of all of these resorts is that you can combine a summer and a winter holiday, with most offering a package price that gives you access to the whole mountain with other terrain for mountain biking and hiking available lower down.

Generally set at 2,500m or higher, glacier ski areas benefit from the low temperatures at altitude, especially at night, so you can expect smooth groomed runs in the morning, soft slushy bumps later on. They’re usually fairly compact, with a mix of blue and red slopes, but you’ll also find the occasional black.

Do ski schools operate in summer?
Definitely – glaciers are great places to hone skills on summer ski courses, most hosting ski racers and freestylers during the summer. Check out resort websites for links to schools, and to the many specialised camps that run during the summer.
