Best tips for Steamboat

We dropped Steamboat from these pages a few years back, along with several other resorts that lacked support from readers. It’s back because we visited in February 2015, and liked both the hill and the nearby town of Steamboat Springs more than we expected to. If it’s going to stay in … reports, please. What we didn’t like, despite recent improvements, is the mountain base area, which has been developed piecemeal over many years. Some of its lodgings are convenient for the snow (some are emphatically not), but it is devoid of life after the immediate après session. Plans to redevelop the Ski Time Square area to the left of the lift base give some hope. Meanwhile, the increasingly amusing town is only a shuttle ride away. Steamboat is a short drive from the long-established town of Steamboat Springs. It is relatively isolated – a 3-hour drive from Denver – and taking it into a trip with another resort is not very easy. The drive from Denver involves two passes which can be closed by snow. The local airport has flights from 11 hubs, so don’t assume that flying into Denver is necessarily the thing to do.

PROS:

  • Varied mountain with extensive easy runs and rightly famed gladed terrain
  • Real town with some Western character, a drive from the slopes
  • Fair mountain restaurants
  • Good snow record (the home of Champagne Powder™) – but …

CONS:

  • Low altitude by Colorado standards – snow can deteriorate quickly
  • Modern base has little appeal except some convenient lodging developments
  • Most lodgings are a drive from both the slopes and the town
  • Not enough groomed runs to amuse keen intermediates for a week
