Best tips for Espace San Bernardo-La Rosière- La Thuile

La Rosiere is very different from its famous neighbours such as Val d’Isere-Tignes and Les Arcs – much smaller, quieter and sunnier. Many reporters are more impressed than we are by the skiing, which mainly consists of several runs down a single (admittedly very wide) open slope. But the link with La Thuile over the border in Italy adds another dimension. La Rosiere is built in traditional chalet style high up on the road from Bourg-St-Maurice to the Petit St Bernard pass to Italy. In winter the road ends at a car park at the top of La Rosiere, just below the main lifts. There’s a small main village and an even smaller, newer satellite (Les Eucherts), a short bus ride – or a floodlit forest walk – to the east. This is more or less self-sufficient, but offers less choice of everything than the main village.

PROS:

  • Fair-sized area of slopes if you include linked La Thuile in Italy
  • Fine panoramic views
  • Big dumps of snow when storms sock in from the west, but …

CONS:

  • When storms do sock in, slopes and link to Italy can be bleak/shut
  • Snow quality often affected by sun
  • Local pistes limited and lack variety
  • Limited village diversions
