Best tips for Fernie
Fernie has long had cult status among the residents of Calgary, and we have also had a good flow of reports from enthusiastic British visitors impressed by the adventurous skiing – it’s mostly ungroomed, and much of it is steep, with a lot of lightly wooded slopes (rare in Europe). It’s now quite a good resort for novices, too. The ones who will want to look elsewhere are keen but cautious, piste-only intermediates. We find ourselves more strongly drawn to Fernie than the minus points listed above might lead you to expect. ‘Hard to explain how it gets under your skin,’ says a similarly smitten reporter. It is, Tanya, it is. Fernie Alpine Resort is set a little way up the mountainside from the flat Elk Valley floor and a couple of miles from the little town of Fernie. Outings to Kimberley are possible; a coach goes weekly, taking about 90 minutes.
PROS:
- Good snow record, with less chance of rain than at Whistler
- Blissfully quiet much of the time
- Great terrain for those who like it steep, deep, and lightly wooded – including confident intermediates
- Snowcat operations nearby
CONS:
- Mountain resort is very limited
- Access to many excellent runs is via slow lifts and long traverses
- Not a huge amount of groomed cruising to do
- After a dump it can take time to make the bowls safe (and to get the groomed trails groomed again)
