Best tips for La Grave - La Meije

La Grave enjoys cult status among experts. It has around 500 visitor beds and just one serious lift serving a high, wild and almost entirely off-piste mountainside. The result: an exciting, usually crowd-free area. Strictly, you ought to have a guide, but in good weather many people go it alone. La Grave is a small, unspoiled village built along the road up to the Col du Lautaret. A car is useful for access to Les Deux-Alpes down the valley and Serre-Chevalier over the pass.

PROS:

  • Legendary off-piste mountain
  • Usually crowd-free
  • Usually good snow conditions
  • Link to Les Deux-Alpes

CONS:

  • Poor weather means closure
  • As a holiday base, suitable for experts only
  • Through-traffic detracts from Alpine village atmosphere
  • Little to do off the slopes
