New ski airline offers exclusive resort deals

Ski-focused airline Powdair is taking the snow-sports industry by storm after its public debut at The Telegraph Ski & Snowboard Show last week.

Keen to welcome skiers and snowboarders onto its planes this winter, the new airline has announced a number of special offers for passengers in association with its partner resorts in Switzerland.

Included in the exclusive deals are free lift passes for Powdair passengers visiting Anzère; 15 per cent off all hotel booking in Crans-Montana; two-for-one lift passes in Nendaz, Thyon and Verbier; Christmas and Easter lift pass deals in the Portes du Soleil; and 20 per cent discount on accommodation in Sion.

“All of our resort partners have given us fantastic support over the past few days and the exclusive offers now available for skiers and snowboarders to stay in the Valais region and beyond once they have flown with Powdair are incredible,” said Zöe Ombler from Powdair. “We’re now really looking forward to our first flight on December 11.”

Powdair is set to make its first flight from the UK to Sion airport next month from London City Airport, and recently announced it will be running flights from six UK airports – London City, London Luton, London Southend, Southampton, Bristol and Manchester  – with the aim of reducing journey times to the Valais region’s world-famous resorts.

As well as Zermatt and Verbier, Sion is convenient for transfers to Swiss ski resorts including Saas Fee, Crans-Montana, Leukerbad, Anzère and Val d’Anniviers resorts such as Grimentz and Zinal.

From Sion it’s around 45 minutes to Verbier and an hour to Zermatt. Nendaz and Veysonnaz – both part of the same 4 Vallées ski area as Verbier – and Crans-Montana are the nearest resorts, each a half-hour drive or less. In comparison it takes around two and a half hours to drive from Geneva to Zermatt and two hours to Verbier.

The company also won the best start-up award in the World Snow Awards hosted at the Telegraph Ski & Snowboard Show, alongside 20 other winners including head of Disability Snowsports UK Fiona Young, who won the lifetime achievement award.

Powdair also announced a new partnership with the charity Snow-Camp at the Show, which dedicates its work to empowering inner-city young people with snow-sport skills and qualifications.

Arriving at Sion is a dramatic affair entailing a steep descent into a valley surrounded by mountains, comparable to better-known Alpine approaches such as Innsbruck in Austria. Like Innsbruck, Sion is a category C airport – those with the trickiest approaches and landings or take-offs – for which pilots need special training.
